Passion Generation Christian Praise Music in Tagalog

Passion Generation Christian Praise Music in Tagalog and FilipinoHere is a short video feature about one of the music recording and mixing sessions conducted here at our temporary studio. The Passion Generation Band is a group of young Filipinos from Calbayog City, Samar. They are lead by Kevin Cho, a Christian missionary and professional music producer who hails from South Korea. They came in with a live recording of their concert at a church in Quezon City - the plan was to clean up the audio and mix the songs at Sound Weavers. However, Kevin the producer and our engineering staff realized that the songs can really benefit from a few overdubs to really elevate the production to professional and international standards, thus the musicians were called in again to cure some of the performances. This is not bad at all, even famous and name artists routinely clean up and fix their live recording releases.

Analog & Digital Mixing. ITB and OTB Hybrid.

Here are photos of the pro audio equipment used during the mixing sessions of HIJA and Dr. Crowley records. For both projects, we really strived to go analog as much as possible, utilizing Pro Tools as tape recorder and editor, as well as for automation. We relied on the artists/musicians and their gear for most of the tone shaping, avoiding unnecessary processing so we can preserve the "feel" and "feeling" of the performances. HIJA is a funk-ish soul band while Dr. Crowley is a blues-based rock n roll band.

Studio sessions. Trumpet and Harmonica recordings.

First post for 2009, here are some video clips of exciting happenings at teh recording studio that occurred in the last quarter of 2008. We spill the beans on gear and approach to the recording, equipment talk galore.

    Trumpet Wah

Our first video features Wowee Anzanio, trumpet player of the band HIJA who's music falls on the soul genre with a strong sense of funk. We've been recording HIJA's debut CD since November 2008. We're optimistic that their record will get picked up by a major label.

    Juke Blues Harp

Our second video features Ronnie Badilla, a master blues harp player laying down juke-ish harmonica licks for Dr. Crowley's "Swallow My Pride" song which is included in Dr. Crowley's upcoming debut CD to be released by Rebolusyon Rekords in March 2009.

Enjoy these recording studio session videos.

This 8 year old Filipina girl from Batangas CAN sing

Last March I had the pleasure of recording a tiny 8-year old Filipina girl form Batangas Philippines. She was a small and sleepish child when I walked in to start the recording session. Her benefactors arranged for a day of recording and wanted the session video-taped. Lucky us, they gave us permission to share the videos on our web site. Without further ado, let us introduce to you Beverly Arce, a small girl with a big voice. Click on the photos to watch her singing live on youtube videos.

Mridangam, Drum from South India played by Canadian Singer/Songwriter

Mridangam South India drum played by James from CanadaWe would like to share these session photos of James Roop playing the Mridangam, a two sided drum/percussion instrument used in South Indian music. During the session, we called the instrument either bongos or drums, but we were all curious what this drum instrument is really called.

Thanks to Wikipedia, now we have an idea...

The mridangam is a double-sided drum whose body is usually made using a hollowed piece of jackfruit wood about an inch thick. The two mouths or apertures of the drum are covered with a goat skin leather and laced to each other with leather straps around the circumference of drum. These straps are put into a state of high tension to stretch out the circular membranes on either side of the hull, allowing them to resonate when struck. These two membranes are dissimilar in width to allow for the production of both bass and treble sounds from the same drum.

James is a Canadian singer/songwriter currently based in the Philippines. Click the title for more information about this South India drum recording session.

Live Remote Recording with MacbookPro Digi 003 Rack

Live music recording studio remote audioI received my brand spanking new MacBook Pro just a day before the Blueskrieg Blues Night special at 19East - this is a special concert production for us coz of Binky and Lampano Alley in the artist lineup - I've always intended to record and video the gig since getting the date confirmed 10 days ago.

Anyway, I trust Mac's with ProTools so much that I went ahead with the live remote recording intent despite limited runtime with the Macbook Pro (a 2.4 Dual Core with 4Gigs of RAM). I recorded 8 tracks from the Midas Legend 3000 board's direct out...

Royer SF-12 stereo ribbon microphone for easy Blumlein & MS recordings

microphone stereo Royer SF-12 ribbon mic Drum OverheadWe're excited to enter the wonderful world of easy* stereo recordings – with excellent analog sound quality – as the Royer SF-12 stereo coincident ribbon microphone can deliver. We put up the Royer SF-12 as overhead mic on drums – which in hindsight was appropriate for the session – a punk (speed punk) style of drumming with lots of hits (LOTS of hits) – from the kick drum to the snare to the cymbals. Here are some photos of the drum microphone setup for that session with the Royer SF-12 about 6.5feet high in the middle of the drum kit. Just one more sound weaving options for drummers – only at Sound Weavers. Enjoy the drum recording session photos inside.
