Passion Generation Christian Praise Music in Tagalog

Here is a short video feature about one of the music recording and mixing sessions conducted here at our temporary studio.

The Passion Generation Band is a group of young Filipinos from Calbayog City, Samar. They are lead by Kevin Cho, a Christian missionary and professional music producer who hails from South Korea. They came in with a live recording of their concert at a church in Quezon City – the plan was to clean up the audio and mix the songs at Sound Weavers. However, Kevin the producer and our engineering staff realized that the songs can really benefit from a few overdubs to really elevate the production to professional and international standards, thus the musicians were called in again to cure some of the performances. This is not bad at all, even famous and name artists routinely clean up and fix their live recording releases.

As the Passion Generation Band has been occupying the studio for a couple of weeks, seeing their true passion and dedication to the Tagalog Praise songs – we decided to document their session with a video production. On the video, Kevin explains the project and the members of Passion Generation are seen while they are singing, performing and having fun.

A few technical bits. Kevin used Gerry’s old (but STILL trusty mbox) to edit on his MacBookPro while Jonathan was recording the band. Keen eyed recording engineers will also notice the unconventional mic positioning that we had to employ to get better performances from the singers (they needed to see each other for visual cues on starts and stops). OK – you got us, we were also trying to minimize the room tones on our untreated temporary recording area (hardcore!).

It’s not hard to tell that Kevin Cho is a seasoned producer, he was able to salvage an almost-OK recording and turn it into international quality professional level music. He also ran military bootcamp style sessions, kidding! On our part here at SoundWeavers, we relished the guerrilla-type recording environment, truly hard core! We put our ProTools skills and programming to the test with this project, aligning and syncing tracks from different recording systems, cleaning up hum and room tone, the works (hardcore!). Oh and our analog hardwarez helped, it turns out Kevin likes compressors as we do – from the Really Nice Ones to the Really Nasty JoeMeek SC22. Our revitalized API Lunchbox with 512, 525 and 550 were also put to full action – sweet sounds!

Best wishes to the Passion Generation on their mission to spread Christianity through their live CD album filled with Tagalog/Filipino praise music.
