Overhead drum mics. Stereo pairs in XY configuration. We exerted best effort to align the height and focus of the microphones, as a result – the stereo pairs were 3 to 6 inches apart at the most but the projectile of the pairs were still towards the center of the kit. For this batch, we employ two different sets of mics, the Shure SM81 and AKG 451B small diaphragm condenser mics, the 3rd set is our favorite Oktava MK-012s. .

  • Oktava MK-012 (cardiod capsule) condenser mic to Shadow Hills GAMA preamp. AKA Octava MC-012
  • Shure SM81 to Universal Audio 2-610 tube preamps
  • AKG 451B to Great River MP2NV preamp

The succeeding samples feature a mix and match direct mic sounds of kick and TAKEN snare with the overhead stereo mics. Lots of fun for drum sound addicts.

Kick and Snare drums with Overheads. The following audio samples demonstrate the myriad of sounds that can be achieved by combining the direct sounds of the kick and TAKEN snare with that of the overhead mics. For even more listening pleasure, we’ve extended the mixing and matching so you can have a firm idea on the sonic possibilities for your drum kit recordings here at Sound Weavers. These samples are still from the same performance as the direct mic’d drums.
